Leonardo da Vinci wrote, “To develop a complete mind: Study the science of art. Study the art of science. Learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else.”
In the above quote, da Vinci points out that we are all connected. Even after living through a very isolated time this past year, we are still working, playing, and creating with each other. In some ways, separation has helped us to see more clearly with whom and how we are connected. Given that we are entering a new year with this increased awareness, many are struggling with expectations. There is a gap between how we perceive something or someone to be and how they are. This gap between expectation and reality has never been more obvious than now. How are we going to remedy, manage and adjust our expectations through the year? Well, better understanding of the word itself and the power it packs is a good start.
Expectations! What powerful word loaded with multiple meanings and emotions. So much so, I almost changed my mind about this topic for the Blog! But after several days of researching and thinking about the importance of balancing the challenging parts of the word, I met my curiosity level. It occurred to me that whether disappointed or happy, many of us find occasion to ask “Well, what did you expect?” I decided it is a good time of the year to bring up the subject and fulfill my expectation for this Blog.
The energy of this year asks for our expectations to possess a confident, uplifted, and clearly seen “all in” enthusiasm that sparks a fire under everything and connects us in ways not anticipated. On an individual level, as conscious co-creators of our day, month and well, life, we rise and fall depending on our expectations. What is expected to happen, most likely happens, perhaps because we subconsciously work toward that end.
The word expectation can be used as a substitute word for belief. Therefore, expectations and beliefs become a self-fulfilling prophecy of our own making. Again, what is expected to happen, most likely happens. The word expectation when projecting negative statements sounds better. “I expect he/she might fail” is far softer than, “I believe you are going to fail.” However, even if the delivery sounds socially softer, you are sending the same energy; it is still the message of failure. That might very well be what you want, but on a closer look, it might not be what you want. Once more, what is expected to happen, most likely happens.
The Universe is literal. Every word, belief, and expectation count. There is no more room to think, talk and expect in ways you do not want. I once talked to a person who told me that if she expected little, she would always exceed her expectations. Wow! That may have worked in years past, (probably not as good as she thought it did), but not today. The old theory of setting the bar low will only keep us low.
The next time you hear someone else or catch yourself saying the phrase, “Well, what did you expect?”, you now have the understanding and option to quickly reverse the moment into a more perfect question that will help you to see the answer clearly. When you have the answer, then you can quickly keep or change your emotional response.
We are all connected. Keeping individual expectations high and positive through the year and beyond will affect the whole planet. Understanding our individual power is how we close the gap between expectations and reality.
Love to all,
