Nature, history, and our four-legged friends are some of our best teachers. All three have taught us that resilience is needed to survive. According to Google, psychologists define resilience as the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress. So, here we are focusing another muscle that needs definition.
The issue of “resilience” is spotlighted when we are faced with extreme situations for which we have not yet developed adaptive mechanisms. Many seem to be fighting hard to find their own deeper resilience and wondering if or when their inner strength will blossom.
Taking guidance from knowledge that worked in the past is always a good idea. Nature stands strong and is willing to let the life cycle flow without questioning what is being thrown at it knowing it will be okay. History goes through cycles and only by looking back do we analyze what took place. Human’s question everything. Perhaps this is why it is so hard for us to grasp the concept that we will flow in directions that are best for us.
The human spirit is amazing! Leo Tolstoy said, “There is something in the human spirit that will survive and prevail. There is a tiny, brilliant light in the heart of man no matter how dark the world becomes.” I chose this quote because it is a perfect mantra for today. And as the history of the Russian writer has shown through his personal ups and downs, resilience and faith in the human spirit came through beautifully.
So, what do resilient people have in common?
I am sure after reading the above list you will say, I have all of them! Of course, you do. However, if you are feeling beat up from hanging on and trying hard to be strong, read the skills of resilience again to remind yourself how strong you are. Hard times test us, but also teach us lessons, make us stronger, and in many ways help us to discover how adaptable we really are. The focus is not necessarily what circumstances may be at this moment. You are the author of your story and your story is your life.
