Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India said, “Life is like a game of cards. The hand that is dealt is determinism; the way you play it is free will.”
The first hand in most card games is delivered by the dealer. In the game of life we are dealt multiple hands to navigate, decipher and act on. Over the last year and a half, I think everyone on planet Earth was shocked by the debilitating hand that was dealt in 2020. But now, after many months of watching the game of life unfold from that starting point, there is no question we are in many ways unconsciously continuing to play the old game, trying very hard to ignore the cards that were dealt. Some parts of the game are still working, while others are hanging on by a thread and many have just disappeared! Accepting your present hand or new starting point in the game of life is helpful; however, the more we move toward acceptance of ‘doing things differently’, that acceptance becomes more imperative by the day.
Nehru’s quote focuses on acknowledgment and choice. Sometimes in a card game folding is a good option. However, in the game of life post COVID, we have all witnessed what folding, retreating and holding looks and feels like. Those were choices made when the unparalleled unknown hovered over the earth. Many of the choices being made in the early days of COVID were ones that gave the illusion of not having free will or options. We always have options.
Free will and choices in times of unknown destinations can be disturbing for the best of us. Intentions are a superpower. An equal superpower is recognizing what happened over the past months (the hand you are starting with now) which givies a deeper awareness of a new opening hand.
Luckly an ongoing constant in our lives is the dynamic of choice. This choice is responding to what shows up in our life.
The month of October in the business world is used as a time to prepare and plan for the next year. It is also a good idea for our personal lives. Over the next few weeks, with the support of cosmic energies, everyone and every business will be designing what 2022 might look like. With the final Mercury Retrograde over for 2021 we once again are catapulting into different energies. Figure it out upfront, understand everything you can, and make moves with confidence. This is not new information, but will be the continued and ongoing theme for the last months of this year.
We are playing the game of life in a rare time of change as outdated structures and ways of living are dissolving. The time has arrived to shift to a new game and not only accept the new hand that has been dealt but embrace it.
Enjoying stories of surprise and transformation make it to the top of entertainment lists. To witness a character develop into someone different from where they started is intriguing. I hope you take a minute and trace the changes and choices you have made in the past 18 months. With an honest look, you will be inspired!
