June 2020, starts out with Mercury in a shadow degree and will be retrograde from June 17 to July 11, and will move fully out of the shadow period on July 31. Plus there are two Moon Eclipses, followed by a Solar Eclipse on June 21st, which is also the Summer Solstice!
These are just a few events taking place in the heavens above this month. Mercury retrogrades in the sign of Cancer. Cancer is the Zodiac sign that rules family and linage and of course in retrograde days, it brings a high focus on communication in those areas. Instead of the normal disturbance effects with retrogrades, this one supports reconnection to family and linage and let’s add to the party, ourselves.
No matter what you have going on in your life, there is no doubt this retrograde will be taking us down all kinds of memory lanes, and makes us pay attention to some classic issues like how we communicate on every level, money and the deserving of it and how we are moving or not moving forward.
Retrogrades are normally considered a time to reflect and rethink what we have or would like to have in our lives. It is a time to make lists and check them twice. However this retrograde being in the water sign of Cancer bumps up the reflection, contemplation and planning to a bolder opportunity of outright investigation and curiosity.
Curiosity, Uhmmm… When did we stop being curious? It is highly possible that the word itself left our vocabulary the minute we declared ourselves “adults”. I don’t think anyone who is an adult declared one day to stop being curious, but over time in many ways it happened. Being curious can feel uncomfortable, especially when it is looked at as indecisive. Looking at different sides of a topic with enough curiosity sometimes takes a minute or two. But many of us adults don’t always have or take the time and are pressured for an answer. Do you know or do you not know? What is your answer? And the conflict begins! Do I stay the course of knowing or become curious enough to search for new? If I find something new or better, I might have to change and we don’t always want to admit there is something better. The more uncomfortable we are in the moment usually is a determining factor to allowing ourselves to be curious!
The fight between searching for answers and having the answers becomes so strong that sometimes we just fill in the void with a story (not always true or best or even logical) falling back to what we already thought to be true just to keep us feeling like we are moving forward.
We crave having answers. Answers bring a feeling of certainty. The feeling behind certainty is of action. Then after the answer is decided, and action is being taken we sometimes have to defend our answer by saying (trust me) “I am right” whether we are or not. We then stand in the same story until we are again uncomfortable with the moment and curiosity comes back to the forefront and we begin to reach for another, better answer. The cycle can be exhilarating, exhausting, emphatic and earthshaking!
I hope you take the gift this retrograde is giving and become more curious than you have been in a long time. It will take a willingness to be uncomfortable within the tension of knowing and not knowing- time and curiosity to investigate different possibilities- to choose higher thinking, to be curious enough to ask different questions and to be willing to find new answers. Taking this approach to life during the month of June will certainly be supported by the energies of this Mercury retrograde. So, try it out — be curious enough to listen and sweep out old stories, making room for new ideas of certainty which will facilitate action, grace and forward movement that our brains crave.
Byron Katie’s work is a powerful process of inquiry called The Work. Her “Is it True” questions are perfect starting point for those who are curious!
