Valentine’s Day pre-1300’s has a sorted darker history, however that all changed when European communities brought poetry to the Valentine’s festival. It started with a poet named Geoffery Chaucer who wrote a poem about lovebirds finding their mate. His popularity inspired other artists to create versions of romantic songs and poems. By the 19th century Valentine’s Day evolved into the current traditions of gift giving, poetry through cards, and other expressions of affection. Chocolate was associated with this holiday long before the marketing and commercialization took hold. In the late 1800’s chocolate became more affordable to the middle class. Cadbury was the first company to sell chocolate bars in heart shaped boxes. It was so popular; the rest of the story is history!
